Living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, I found myself deeply moved by the resurgence of Blues and Jazz, thanks to the White Stripes’ revival of classic sounds. In 2004, inspired and eager, I began designing a piece in Photoshop to honor the legendary artists who shaped this music. But life’s demands kept the vision incomplete.

Reinspired by the soulful tunes of these greats, I immersed myself in their histories. Learning about their struggles and triumphs fueled my determination to lift them up through my art. Their stories, often overshadowed, deserved a spotlight.

Years later, the arrival of the iPad and Apple Pencil reignited my passion. Space was tight; my art studio had transformed into a nursery for my baby girl. The iPad provided the perfect solution, allowing me to work on a grand scale without needing a physical studio.

The collection, divided into Legends I and Legends II, features iconic figures like Son House, John Coltrane, Nina Simone, and Aretha Franklin. Listening to their music as I drew, I felt their presence in every stroke, channeling their emotion into my lines. Each portrait became a therapeutic journey, reducing my anxiety and rewarding me with a sense of accomplishment.

I hope viewers see familiar faces and are compelled to explore the lesser-known ones.
